Characterization of Death in Dickinsons Poetry - 2173 Words
CHARACTERIZATION OF DEATH IN DICKINSONS POETRY Emily Dickinson had a sad life full with tragic experiences and its influences on her poetry can be seen in most of her works. During her life, she struggled with traumatic effects of a succession of deaths and due to this situation she spend the later half of her years in grief. The tragic deaths of people close to Dickinson have affected her writing and style of expression, in which death became a persisting theme of her poetry. Even though most of her poems consist directly on the subject death, she also used unusual ways to write about this theme, by writing about immortality as a state of consciousness in an everlasting present. A typical example can be seen in her poems Because Iâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In addition, the family of the narrator is there to say goodbye to their loved one for the last time as she dying in her bed. For any human being, a moment such as this one is supposed to be a vital and most solemn time; however instead of reflecting the melancholy of this moment, Dickinson wrote that there is a fly buzzing around the room. Actually, this fly causes stealing the leading role of the show and gets everyones notice, as the room, Was like the Stillness in the Air / Between the Heaves of Storm, (3-4). The narrator feels mainly bothered at this interruption; hence, as inexplicable as death is, there are some hopes, such as seeing a brilliant white glow upon walking into heaven or seeing God, so far the narrator only hears a fly buzzing, no light, no salvation, no God. The next stanza is about the familys enduring by waiting for her death. The dying woman portrays them as, The Eyes around had wrung them dry, (5). Her family members are only waiting at this moment, because they have cried as much as they may possibly cry over losing a beloved one. In the lines For that last Onset when the King / Be witnessed in the Room, (7-8), Dickinson points out an irony by using the words that last Onset. Last clearly signifies an end at the same time as onset stands for a beginning. This irony involving the two contexts cannot beShow MoreRelatedEmily Dickinson - Theme of Love2465 Words à |à 10 PagesIntroduction Emily Dickinsonââ¬â¢s poetry is classified by editors as poems about nature, love, death, religion and others. The Reality Television Controversy Essay Example For Students
The Reality Television Controversy Essay There are many controversies that come in and out of our lifetime. Whether or not we let these things affect the way we live puts a spin on how we can react to them. Reality TV has been around for a long time and it seems like the longer itââ¬â¢s around the more ââ¬Å"realityâ⬠gets distorted. It is proven that the more young adults watch these TV shows, the more they are prone to act the way the world wants them to be. Im arguing that reality television is all around a bad idea. In this paper I will discuss my arguments and counterarguments on how the ââ¬Å"realityâ⬠is a mockery, how harmful it is on a younger generation, and how itââ¬â¢s entertaining for the wrong reasons. I went into some research to see actually how much ââ¬Å"realityâ⬠was a part of these reality television shows and the reality of it isnt as real as you would think. Most TV shows such as Keeping Up with the Kardashians, or The Bachelor are for entertainment instead of informing you of whatââ¬â¢s going on in their lives. We will write a custom essay on The Reality Television Controversy specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now James Poniewozik states, ââ¬Å"The problem is that makers of reality TV have the power to imply or outright fabricate things about real people who have to carry their fake reputations into their real livesâ⬠(Poniewozik). The viewers feel like theyre being lied to, in a way. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, reality television is defined as ââ¬Å"U. S. television programs that focus on non-fictional subject matter, primarily with the aim of providing entertainment rather than information. They say in this definition that the focus is non-fiction, but would you say thatââ¬â¢s what it could be classified as? Most producers are distorting the reality of the whole show. In James Poniewozik article, ââ¬Å"How Reality TV Fakes It,â⬠he lists five tricks that shows use to distort the reality of it all. The first trick is frankenbiting; this is where producers pick and pull what scenes they want to come together what they wish it had been. The second trick is fake settings; the name is explanatory in itself but for example, they can use stage sets for certain scenes in a show if the real setting doesnt fit their perfect description. The third trick is misleading montage. It is literally misleading because this is where they cut and paste certain scenes where the actor may seem upset over something so small when in reality she was upset about something that happened in a different scene in the show. The fourth trick is the leading interview. This is when the person can be in question and if they didnââ¬â¢t provide enough information to make a fake conflict on the show, they can used questions they asked in the right manner and mix and match their words. The last trick is the overdub. This is where editors can add captions and noises to scenes in shows to make it seem like theirs more going on. In general, people love reality TV. Even knowing that most of the scenes in the show are hoaxes, they still watch it for many reasons. Itââ¬â¢s entertaining, and many feel like they can relate because they are average people playing fake roles. Media has made communication easier for the world today, which makes it easier for directors and producers to communicate to their audiences using TV shows. As the horizons broaden for entertainment, it makes it harder to compete for the audiencesââ¬â¢ attention. It seems that fiction shows create more of an audience; this is why producers have created a reality TV formula to show what those shows should contain in order to be a successful reality TV show. Bonnie Johnson and Michael Graves, in their article ââ¬Å"Keeping it Real,â⬠give us a formula that most reality TV follow, ââ¬Å"The reality TV formula includes the following: real people, uncontrolled situations, immediacy and intimacy, an emphasis on conflict in which participants balance individual and community needs, an observational style, a ââ¬Ëconfessional space,ââ¬â¢ editing to create an entertaining package, and interactive elements (voting, texting by home viewers)â⬠(214). The fact that these entertaining and interactive tools are used in these reality TV shows are being used by planners makes it a successful engagement tool. .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb , .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb .postImageUrl , .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb , .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb:hover , .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb:visited , .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb:active { border:0!important; } .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb:active , .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud38e8b38e57b5c082ac86e33220623bb:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Roger Ebert on Finding Nemo EssayPlanners also believe that these shows are great way for their audiences to go out and try different lifestyles. Friends, although itââ¬â¢s not classified as a reality show, itââ¬â¢s a show where six friends live together in New York and portrays real life situations of people who live in New York. This can influence viewers to want to also live in New York with their six friends. In conclusion, the directors and producers are not all worried about the actual reality of their lives but the twists and turns they can add in the show to make their ââ¬Å"livesâ⬠seem more interesting in the light. Remember about twenty years ago when MTV actually lived up to its name? Well, these days, it contains reality TV shows such as, Teen Mom, Jersey Shore, Real World, Catfish, and The Hills. Should I name more or do you have the point? All of these reality TV shows have one thing in common, many of the young generation feel this is what ââ¬Å"normalâ⬠is. ââ¬Å"Normalâ⬠in these shows has excessive alcohol consumption, premarital sex, teen pregnancy, or irrational behavior. All of which is the main ingredients of bad influences. Most people feel as if theyââ¬â¢re not as easily influenced as others but ââ¬Å"experts fear that a steady diet of watching people behaving badly increases our tolerance for rudeness or even violenceâ⬠(Is Reality TV Messing With Your Head). Watching reality TV is like eating junk food; the more you do it, the unhealthier it is. Instead, watch TV shows that donââ¬â¢t contain immoral stances. An example of these types of TV shows would be shows like American Idol, Dancing with The Stars, The Voice, or Iron Chef. These reality TV shows might have some point of drama or battles but the majority is positive and the audience is able to interact with the shows. I believe that the parents of this generation should talk to their kids about these shows, teach them to live in their own reality, and be inspired in the right ways. The main audience of reality TV in the younger generation is teenage girls. They somehow thrive on conflicts and drama that occurs in these shows. This is why many people believe that these TV shows have influenced these young girls to behave a certain way. Weller says that, ââ¬Å"In 2011, they asked more than 1,100 American girls, between the ages of 11 and 17, questions about their attitudes and reality TV viewing habits. â⬠Whether or not the girls watched reality TV, they still asked both parties the same questions. They asked questions such as if they believed gossip was a normal part of a relationship between girls or if they had to lie to get what they want. To make a conclusion to Wellerââ¬â¢s argument, he states that, ââ¬Å"heavy reality TV viewers tended to see the gap between a producers rendering of reality and the real thing as being much narrower than a non viewer would. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, an addiction is ââ¬Å"the state or condition of being dedicated or devoted to a thing of an immoderate or compulsive kind. â⬠Everyone can be addicted to something in his or her life and that can include the idea that reality TV can fill a gap in oneââ¬â¢s life. Just like any other addiction, a person can become obsessed with the show. Not every show can be a bad thing to be obsessed with, but the gap that the show fills may become more harmful than one can handle. Viewers are sold on the twisted, perfect reality of the castââ¬â¢s lives in the show. But in ââ¬Å"realâ⬠reality, the producers have sold the illusion that itââ¬â¢s less perfect than they have portrayed. Steven Dodrill says that, ââ¬Å"The studiesââ¬â¢ hypotheses were developed to gauge connectedness with regards to the areas of popularity, excitement, academic achievement, and physical attractivenessâ⬠(105-106). The more that these producers use these tricks, the more the views and the more the shows can take over their life for that moment in time. .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172 , .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172 .postImageUrl , .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172 , .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172:hover , .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172:visited , .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172:active { border:0!important; } .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172:active , .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172 .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u4eb14d3000956be9af38446b67589172:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Deja Vu and Source Code - Comparison EssayWith every so-called wrong opinion, thereââ¬â¢s anotherââ¬â¢s right opinion. Many people can argue that reality TV is just plain, good entertainment. Like I said in previous arguments, producers use certain tactics to draw their audiences in. In the show, The Makeover, they show the familyââ¬â¢s self-improvement through the media. They use this to draw you in through an emotional pull. You see the familyââ¬â¢s life in the beginning and towards the end you see how this show has blessed them with a house of their dreams. This allows you to have a reflexive aspect with the show. It also allows you to sort of live through this family and their future happiness. Katherine Sender states that, ââ¬Å"Audiences aspire to be good citizens by adopting the showsââ¬â¢ guidelines for living as a resource that they draw on to reform themselves in line with the valuesâ⬠(48). Sender is explaining that these shows are sort of forming their hired cast to be part of their perfect sob story to draw the audience in and think about what good they are doing in their life. Reality television has made such an impact in this century that if they were to completely boycott the idea of the reality, it would become a huge controversy. If we die down the extremities of the immoral behavior in these shows, less of our population would reject the entertainment. I believe that reality TV argues many positives, negatives, and independent views. I donââ¬â¢t watch reality TV for the reason that to me, itââ¬â¢s corrupt and Iââ¬â¢m better off not worrying about other peopleââ¬â¢s real or fake lives. Iââ¬â¢ve seen these shows directly affect college students in an obsession with watching the show and they reject other priorities in their life. Watching these shows in moderation can help this problem and reassure parents that their kids may only be watching it for simple entertainment. I hope that discussing my arguments and counter-arguments will show that in general, reality TV is a mockery of reality and in that it has a harmful impact on the younger generation and it can be entertaining for the wrong reasons. Resume Tips Part 3 Words and Phrases to Delete from Your Resume
Resume Tips Part 3 Words and Phrases to Delete from Your Resume Choosing the right wording on your resume is very important. Some words pack a punch, and some leave the reader wanting more information. For the final segment in my resume tips series, well focus on two verbs that dont have much power: ââ¬Å"Assistedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Helped.â⬠On one list of recommended resume verbs, Power Verbs for Your Resume from The University of Iowas Pomerantz Career Center, the verbs assisted and helped are listed under a very specific category: Helping. That is the only place where these verbs belong! You should delete these words from your resume and use more powerful verbs. Take a look at some examples below. Telling us on your resume that you assisted somebody with something is only as informative as you make it. Honestly, I do not care that you assisted on a film shoot. I want to know that you held a camera or a boom; that you ordered pizza (or handled catering orders); or that you troubleshot in emergency situations. It is essential that you donââ¬â¢t get fooled into thinking that Assisted and Helped are always power verbs. They often just lead to vague and uninteresting bullets. Instead of Helped Example #1 Compare: a. Helped artists and network personnel. b. Accompanied artists to television appearances and mediated between the artists and network personnel. Instead of Assisted Example #2 Compare: a. Assisted with small claims cases. b. Handled all phases of collection and litigation of small claims cases. Attended small claims court; directed court clerk and court commissioner regarding what action to take on firmââ¬â¢s cases. Version b. in both cases is much more interesting and descriptive than version a. When Helped and Assisted are Appropriate There are limited situations in which it can be appropriate to use the words assisted or helped. For example: a. Words Derived from Pend
Words Derived from Pend Words Derived from Pend Words Derived from Pend By Mark Nichol Pend, stemming from the Latin verb pendere, meaning ââ¬Å"hang,â⬠is used exclusively in legal terminology, as a verb meaning ââ¬Å"be awaiting,â⬠but it appears as the root of many other words referring to hanging or weight, which are listed and defined in this post. Something that is pending is waiting to be resolved. A pendant is a fixture or ornament that hangs; the word can also refer to a certain type of rope used in sailing, is a British English variant of pennant (a small, tapering flag), and may also refer to something complementary or supplementary, such as a companion volume to a book. A compendium (ââ¬Å"weigh togetherâ⬠), meanwhile, is a collection; it is frequently used in a literary sense. To append (ââ¬Å"weigh outâ⬠) is to attach something, and something attached to something else, such as a limb, is often referred to as an appendage. Supplemental content attached to the end of a book is called an appendix, and a vestigial organ of the body is so named because it hangs from the large intestine. (Its full name is vermiform appendix; the first word means ââ¬Å"wormlikeâ⬠). To depend (ââ¬Å"hang fromâ⬠) on someone or something is to rely on him, her, or it; the adjectival form is dependable, dependent is both an adjective and a noun, and dependence is the noun form. (Antonyms referring to freedom from reliance are independent and independence, while codependent, codependence, and codependency refer to control or manipulation of one person by another.) To prepend (ââ¬Å"weigh beforeâ⬠) is to consider. To expend (ââ¬Å"weigh outâ⬠) is to pay; the adjectival form is expendable (though it can also be used as noun). Something impending (ââ¬Å"hanging overâ⬠) is about to occur; the basic verb form is rare. A stipend (ââ¬Å"weigh paymentâ⬠) is money given as pay for short-term work, generally a modest amount not equivalent to a salary. To suspend (ââ¬Å"hang upâ⬠) is to hang something or cause someone to wait for something; the feeling that results is suspense, and the act is called suspension. A pendulum is a weight that swings to and fro to regulate movement; it may also refer figuratively to movement from one position to its opposite. Something that swings heavily can be described as pendulous. Perpendicular (ââ¬Å"hanging thoroughlyâ⬠) means ââ¬Å"projecting at right anglesâ⬠); it is sometimes employed as a synonym for precipitous and may refers to individuals of distinctive types. (Perpendiculum is the Latin term for a plumb line, a weighted cord that in conjunction with gravity is used to ensure that an upright structural element is straight.) Pendentive is an architectural term for a structural element that helps support a dome. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? How interest rates affect peoples purchasing decisions Assignment
How interest rates affect peoples purchasing decisions - Assignment Example The paper explores four types of writing at our most recent workshop. They are summary, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Some of the key differences between them were highlighted. An analysis provides a detailed examination of an article in order to make inferences while an evaluation is an informed judgment arising from an assessment or appraisal of a situation. A summary provides a brief but concise version of an article while a synthesis involves combining separate elements into a coherent and connected whole in order to make a new point. The level of interest rate determines whether people save or consume. At higher levels of interest, some persons save more and consume less. According to Pashigian, a higher interest rate makes current consumption relatively more expensive compared with future consumption. This is a result of the substitution effect that induces the consumer to reduce current consumption and save more. A rise in the interest rate also leads to an increase in wealth for savers as it increases the returns to savings. However, when the interest rate falls there is less or no incentive to save and so people prefer to spend their income on consumer items such as cars, clothing, jewelry, and appliances. Some of these consumer items are financed through borrowing. This confirms the fact that people tend to spend more on consumer items when interest rates are low.
